Sputnik Music Reviews Say Anything's Anarchy, My Dear
As a die hard SA fan, this review stings a little. I had been on the fence about this album to begin with. Alternative Press raved that it was one of the best albums of his career. But I just wasn’t buying it. I loved Burn a Miracle and Say Anything. But songs like Sheep and Anarchy, My Dear just seem a little bit less inspired and less riddled with Say Anything’s usual energy. A bit of a let down after Max stated he was going back to the roots of …Is a Real Boy. And then I read arguments like this:
““Admit It!!!” wasn’t great just because you could agree with it; it was great because even as Bemis decried all those around him, he decried himself as well. He considered himself the most contemptuous of all, and by accepting that, he accepted the people around him too. Now, he’s railing against supposed “issues” that actually mean fucking nothing just because it’s expected of him.”
Extremely heartbreaking, but true. Plus I really miss the awesome guitar. Say Anything will always be my favorite band, and they were bound to make something less than wonderful eventually. But I will continue listening to the album and hope it grows on me. After all, the first time I heard yellow cat/red cat years ago, I was not a fan, but now it’s one of my favorites.
